Forgiven

As we prepare for our trip to Israel, it feels like there's just too much to do and not enough time to do it in. I keep trying to focus on the fact that in a few short weeks it'll all be done and we'll have some unforgettable memories to share. But today I'm reminded of forgiveness.

Lately I've had some really amazing conversations with some really amazing people in which God reminds me that I'm forgiven. I don't parent my children perfectly, my attitude towards my husband isn't always loving, my house isn't immaculately clean, dinner is often late (and sometimes doesn't taste that great), laundry waits until no one has clean underwear; I'm lazy, lacking self-control, a people-pleaser, impatient, prone to anger... the list goes on...

But at the very top of the list is "forgiven." Some days I like that it's there and other days I don't, but that doesn't change the fact that it's there: FORGIVEN.

On my nightstand sits a book titled Give them Grace: Dazzling Your Children with the Love of Jesus by Elyse Fitzpatrick and her daughter, Jessica Thompson. I've recommended a few books before on our blog, but I think EVERY Christian parent should read this book. I'm not even done with it, but have recommended it to several of my mom friends. It's convicting, yes, but has re-aligned my thinking not only in my parenting but in the rest of my life.

I want to be more willing to show my imperfections to other people, especially my husband and children. I want to be ready to ask forgiveness when I know I've sinned. Isn't that what the gospel is all about? We're sinners in need of a Savior. Our Savior is in the business of forgiving sinners who know that they are sinners in need of a Savior. No one has it all together, no matter how much it seems like they do. But when we sinners accept Jesus as Savior, it's not like all of a sudden we don't need grace anymore. We still need forgiveness. We are dependent on it.

Or at least we should be.

All Things

Today was one of those days when I found a plethora of misfortunes to grumble about. As much as I want to list all those things right now, it occurs to me that perhaps it won't help anyone (myself included).

"Do all things without grumbling or disputing," Philippians 2:14
"Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me." Philippians 4:11-13

Oh how this attitude eludes me! I want to curse all the circumstances around me rather than admit the problem is actually within me. I am the one who needs to change. And often times I just don't want to. I want the problem to be everyone and everything around me because it's easier. To face the fact that my sin actually prevents me from experiencing joy in life... It's too humiliating. I like thinking I'm doing "okay." I'm an American. It's not my fault. I don't like free grace.

But that's just it. Grace. Forgiveness. Acceptance. They are free. They're not cheap, but they are free. Jesus spilled his blood, gave His life, took the payment for my sins upon Himself. I deserve the death that He experienced.

Now I can see my sin before a Holy God. I see how ugly it is and how beautiful Jesus is as He washes me whiter than snow. I am redeemed.

I know this will step on toes. It's not popular to tell people they're sinners, even if you lump yourself in there. It's not popular talking about death or what may or may not happen afterwards. But I also know that it is this Jesus who saves. It is this Jesus who gives life and hope and peace. It is this Jesus who strengthens me to be content in all things on days like today.

I pray that some day Paul's attitude of contentment doesn't elude me. In the meantime, I pray that I will live like the gospel actually matters.

Gospel For Life

I'd like to direct you to my friend Eric Durso's blog to check out the series he is blogging about called Gospel For Life. So far, it's been helpful and clear and I highly recommend it to you as food for thought or as resource.
